About and method
Insurance Price Monitor tracks how the prices of insurance change in the United States, using the official Consumer Price Index published by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). We are independent. We are not an insurer, agent or broker and nothing here is advice about any policy.
Data
- All indexes are CPI-U, US city average, not seasonally adjusted, retrieved from the BLS Public Data API. The month-to-month change for car insurance uses the seasonally adjusted series.
- 12-month change compares a month with the same month a year earlier. "Since January 2020" compares the latest month with January 2020.
- Charts marked "rebased" divide each index by its value in the start month and multiply by 100, so lines with different base periods can be compared.
- BLS did not publish October 2025 values for most items, and November 2025 for motor vehicle insurance, because of the 2025 lapse in appropriations. We show those months as not published and do not estimate them.
Accuracy checks
Before each update we recompute every 12-month change shown for the latest month and compare it with the published figure in BLS CPI news release Table 2. For September 2026 all 11 items matched to one decimal place, as did the seasonally adjusted one-month changes for all items and car insurance.
What the CPI does not show
The CPI measures the price of the same cover over time. It is not an average premium and does not show what any one household pays. It has no homeowners insurance index and its health insurance index is estimated indirectly from insurers' retained earnings rather than by pricing premiums. Each page says which applies.
Corrections
Tell us the page and the figure and we will check it against BLS and correct it with a dated note. Corrections are free. We never accept payment to change, add or remove anything.
Updates
BLS publishes the CPI monthly, usually in the middle of the following month. Last checked 29 October 2026.

Checked 29 October 2026. BLS did not publish most October 2025 index values because of the 2025 lapse in federal appropriations, and did not publish November 2025 for motor vehicle insurance. Those months show as not published.
